Four reasons why Barcelona priority target decided to continue at current club – report

Earlier today, Barcelona were dealt with a massive blow as top target Nico Williams dropped a huge hint about his potential stay at Athletic Club.

Nico was Barcelona’s priority target this summer and the club were even willing to meet his €58 million release clause. But it appears the player is all set to prolong his stay in Bilbao, at least for another season.

Why Nico decided to stay

A recent report from MARCA has offered more light on Nico’s decision to stay at Athletic Club, even listing out the factors that were key in convincing him to wait it out on a move to Barcelona.

The number one reason listed in the report is Nico’s development. At just 22, the player wants to continue developing in a friendly environment and further hone himself as a winger.

With 20 goals and 26 assists for Athletic Club in all competitions, Nico has indeed settled in quite well at Athletic and he could only get better from now on.

Another key factor behind Nico’s decision was the fact that Athletic Club pay its stars quite well.

Although Nico would have earned significantly more if he had joined PSG or Barcelona, his current terms at Athletic Club are not peanuts and could well improve going forward.

Moreover, Nico also feels very attached to the Athletic Club, which is hardly surprising given the fact that he also plays with his brother in the senior team.

The club, for their part, are happy that the brothers are creating history together.

Last but not least, Nico’s decision to stay was widely influenced by his agents, who are known for their tight negotiations.

Barcelona, in fact, had a fair share of altercations with Nico’s agents, who have Nico’s best interests at heart.
