Barcelona new signing Dani Olmo chooses surprise shirt number – report

With an agreement in place and medicals completed, it is only a matter before Barcelona officially confirm the signing of Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig.

The Blaugrana reached an agreement for his signing on Tuesday, with the operation set to cost €55 million in fixed fees and another €7 million in variables.

Olmo has already agreed a six-year contract until 2030 with his boyhood club and has passed his medicals earlier today.

Olmo chooses No. 20

With the signing all but done, the next big question on the fans’ minds was what jersey number Olmo would choose upon joining Barcelona.

The 26-year-old had several options, including the legendary No. 10 shirt – the number he wore for Spain at the UEFA Euro 2024, and others like 14, 17, 18, and 25.

However, now, SPORT reports that Olmo has opted to wear the No. 20 shirt at Barcelona.

The No. 20 shirt had become vacant after Barça had let Sergi Roberto’s contract expire and opted not to renew it.

While it was believed that the former Barcelona captain still carried hopes of re-signing for the Blaugrana, Olmo taking over the No. 20 shirt further confirms Roberto’s departure.

As for the new signing, selecting the No. 20 is a bit of a surprise considering that he has never used that number at any of his clubs in the past, be it at youth level or senior level.

While an official confirmation is yet to arrive, the report states that everything indicates Olmo will be Barcelona’s new #20.

It would mean that Roberto will not be re-signed by the Catalans and also that the No. 10 shirt could still be up for grabs considering Ansu Fati’s future is far from certain.
