Eddie Howe delivered an update on the fitness of injury-stricken striker Callum Wilson in a new-look press conference room ahead of the Sela weekender.
Wilson has sat out of training since mid-July, seeing him miss part of our training camp in Germany, the friendly win at Hull and two games in Japan.
It has been touch-and-go whether he’ll be fit for the start of the 2024/25 season after a small procedure on his back and Howe has shared some good and bad news this morning, revealing that he’s set to miss next weekend’s clash with Southampton, but will “be back for the early games of the season”.
“Callum’s a bit further behind but not too long. His recovery is going very well. He’s very positive and it’s not a long-term injury. He’s had an injection in his back, which feels really good, but there is a timescale before he can return.
“I don’t think he’ll make the Southampton game but he’ll be back for the early games of the season.”
It seems there is still some time for recuperation, not to mention the fact he’s barely kicked a ball over pre-season, which means we could see new signing William Osula handed an early chance to show the fans what Howe and the recruitment team invested in.
Osula will, of course, be behind star man Alexander Isak in the pecking order, but we may see him in one of this weekend’s Sela Cup fixtures and there’s every chance he’s in the squad for next Saturday’s clash with the Saints.
