August 8 – Far-right rioters who have taken part in a week of violence across the UK could be barred from football matches.
Banning orders could be introduced as part of a response to violent demonstrations after jail sentences were meted out to some of those involved.
The rioting occurred in several locations following a knife attack that killed three young girls.
Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, has said that rioters should be treated in a similar way to football hooligans.
The possible bans were first reported by the i newspaper, which quoted a law enforcement source who pointed to “increased football-related disorder” in the past year.
Asked about the Government’s response following initial unrest, Sir Keir said he had discussed criminal behaviour orders with police chiefs.
“I would personally like to see more use of those orders in the same way that they’re used in football hooligan cases, to stop people travelling, identify and prevent their patterns of behaviour,” he said.
Meanwhile the English FA used its official supporters guide to warn a zero-tolerance approach will be taken at the first major fixture since the riots broke out.
Manchester City and Manchester United face off on Saturday as they compete for the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.
“People who are found to have committed offences face stadium bans and potential criminal prosecution,” the FA said.
