Paul Mitchell has had a frantic start to his life at Newcastle United. Not only does he need to sign new players, replace staff, and help prepare the squad for the new season. He has a more pressing job on his hands; sell the club’s deadwood.

Now, deadwood might be a little harsh, but there’s a clear difference between those in the squad and those who need to be shifted. As fans, we always look at raising the club’s ceiling, but something as important is raising the club’s floor. One big way to do that is by clearing out some of the club’s weakest players.

The Current state of the squad

Let’s just cut to the chase, Newcastle have several players who need to be moved on. The situation has improved slightly since last season, with Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummet, Matt Ritchie, and Jeff Hendrick.

So far, Newcastle are yet to sell anyone, and it’s likely going to be the next major job for Paul Mitchell, once a move for Marc Guehi is wrapped up. The problem Mitchell will face is the huge wages a number of these players are allegedly on.

Martin Dubravka – £40k a week
Ryan Frayser – £63k a week

All this data comes from Spotrac, and the data does vary on other sites but that is around 150k a week in wages locked down on players the club doesn’t want. For context, that’s about the weekly wage of Bruno Guimaraes, our highest earner. Crucially, that figure equates to just over £7 million a year, which in the PSR world is the same as signing a player for £36 million spread over 5 years. So, you can see why moving on such players is so important.
