Yesterday, Marc-Andre ter Stegen gave the first captain’s speech ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy, signalling the beginning of Barcelona’s new season.
He took the place of Sergi Roberto, who was the first captain last season but did not have his contract renewed for a plethora of reasons.
With a new manager taking over and the club neck-deep in financial and wage bill-related issues, the La Masia graduate officially left Barcelona earlier this week. Earlier today, he even attended the official farewell event organised for him.
Speaking to the media during the event earlier today, Barcelona president Joan Laporta gave his unfiltered thoughts on the legacy the former captain leaves at the club and his time at Barcelona.
“Good morning. Sergi, Coral, the children, relatives. Today is one of those days that is full of emotions and feelings. Thanks to those of you who have come,” he began.
“I see legends of Barça. Xavi, Piqué, Puyol, Sergi’s colleagues, media, I have seen Unzué, everyone,” he added, listing the notable names at the event.
Praising Roberto for his contribution, selflessness and commitment to Barcelona over the years, Laporta said,
“As a president, I wanted to say that you are history, a symbol and you’re an example to follow. Especially from the heart of Barça, which is La Masia. And an exemplary person.”

The president then went on to recall Roberto’s long journey through the ranks of La Masia and how he had always been a one-club man.
“You went through all the categories of the club from the Cadet until you debuted with the first team. I only have words of gratitude for the club and for your exemplary commitment, and because you have always had words of gratitude to the club.”
