I was puzzled when I saw Fabrizio Romano report that Carney Chukwuemeka has a £40m release clause a month or so back.
Chelsea signed Carney for £20m from Aston Villa in the summer of 2022, and two years on we seen little of him in pre-season yet and I’ll be surprised if he even stays at the club now this summer.
I was very happy when Chelsea signed Carney because he is a player I had been watching all summer before he came to Chelsea and I was very impressed with him. I thought it was a decent signing.
But is he now about to become just another teenager we dumped £20m on yet will never actually be a Chelsea player? I would say spun for profit but I can’t see any club even paying £20m for him because he’s barely featured for us. A wasted buy? Looks like it could be.
Maybe the new head coach just doesn’t fancy him? There could be an element to that. But for me he seems perfect for Enzo Maresca’s football, so it’s all very odd.
Carney started in our first two games of the pre-season tour of USA but has not featured in any of the other three games since. A sign that he’s just not impressed Maresca? Maybe.
Perhaps Chelsea and Maresca will want to keep him in the squad as some rotation and cover this season with all the games we will be playing. I can see that happening.
But perhaps a club does come in and trigger his release clause which again, I cannot fathom why we agreed to put that in his contract, I really can’t. Maybe they saw an easy money spinner with it? Who knows.
But either way, even if he stays this season, I don’t think Carney will be at Chelsea for much longer regardless, which is a real shame as I rate him highly.
When he hasn’t been injured for Chelsea last season he was often our best attacking player and the most threatening. But all of that I just see fading away now and on the human side, us wasting the development of a player who was coming on leaps and bounds when he joined Chelsea at the age of 19. Sad to…
