Despite all of Barcelona’s efforts, it now appears that they will miss out on the signing of Nico Williams, who seems set to continue at Athletic Club for the upcoming season.
The 22-year-old winger has been the absolute priority target for Barcelona this summer and for a long time, it appeared like they would get their man.
However, the transfer is starting to seem extremely unlikely now, with Athletic going as far as handing the Spaniard the No. 10 shirt for the upcoming season.
Athletic Club want to renew Nico
Not stopping at that, Athletic Club are now already working on a long-term contract renewal for Nico Williams, reports El Chiringuito TV.
It must be remembered that the Basque outfit had renewed the Spanish winger only in December last year, tying him down to a long-term deal until 2027 with a release clause worth €58 million.

However, having seemingly staved off Barcelona for now, Athletic are eager to hand their prized asset another improved contract and want to finalise it as early as possible.
The new deal will obviously come with an increase in his release clause, which would possibly jeopardise any chances of a future move to Barcelona.
After all, reports suggest that the Blaugrana plan on returning for Nico again in 2025 if they fail now, provided that his release clause amount remains intact and is not increased.
For now, though, Barcelona are already looking at possible alternatives like Kingsley Coman of Bayern Munich, with a season-long loan move for the Frenchman being considered.
