With the MLS transfer window closing tomorrow night, Charlotte FC could return to the table for Miguel Almiron.
First reported just 24 hours ago, it looked like a possibility for Almiron was on the cards thanks to Charlotte FC. However, by the morning the news of a rejection had been confirmed and it seemed like the deal was off. Fast forward another few hours and the deal might have a second wind.
Tom Bogert, former Athletic writer and now the lead MLS man over at CBS is now reporting that Charlotte FC are back at the table with a move for Feyenoord man Calvin Stengs collapsing at the 11th hour. This is surely good news for Newcastle, as it puts Charlotte FC in a difficult position. Lose out on both players or up their bid for Almiron and secure a major target.
While Charlotte FC’s first bid, believed to be around $10m (£7.8m) fell short of Newcastle’s $20m (£15.5m) valuation of Almiron, a desperate Charlotte FC could still go higher in hopes of securing a move for the former MLS star.
That star power could be key to the deal moving forward. While fans of Newcastle United are less keen on Almiron, he’s still a huge name in the MLS. With Almiron only willing to move to a side in Europe or America, could this be the best possible outcome for Newcastle to secure his exit?
The key issue, however, will be if Charlotte FC are willing to meet Newcastle somewhere in the middle and break the club’s transfer record by almost double.
Charlotte FC’s initial bid for Miguel Almiron was $10 million, sources tell @JacobsBen and I.
Newcastle believed to be looking for around $20m for Almiron.
