Barcelona reluctant to let out-of-favour defender join direct La Liga rivals

It appears to be only a matter of time before Clement Lenglet completes a move to Atletico Madrid.

The Frenchman has reportedly accepted a deal with Los Colchoneros, rejecting advances from Villarreal in the process.

The deal could be made official in the coming days, provided Atletico Madrid take care of certain player sales and make the economic provision.

Barcelona have doubts about Lenglet sale

However, a recent report from Mundo Deportivo suggests Barcelona are forming doubts over the sale of Clement Lenglet to Atletico Madrid.

The Catalans are reluctant about selling the defender to a direct rival like Atleti, who are likely to be a strong competitor in the club’s bid to reclaim the league title next season.

That said, Barça would re-look only certain conditions in the Lenglet deal and are not completely dissuading from selling the Frenchman to Atleti.

Why Lenglet’s sale is important

There are more upsides to Lenglet’s sale rather than downsides, as far as FC Barcelona are concerned.

The Frenchman’s sale, after all, could help Barça secure the registration of players such as Inigo Martinez, Alex Valle, Pablo Torre, Pau Victor, Vitor Roque and new signing, Dani Olmo.

With the season all set to begin on Saturday, Barça would look to get the deal done as soon as possible so they can register these key players.

Moreover, the club must find themselves quite lucky to have a suitor for the Frenchman, whose form and fitness have stagnated over the past few years.

Lenglet’s sale, therefore, comes at an opportune time for FC Barcelona, even though the defender is joining a direct rival in the form of Atletico Madrid.
