Sky Sports have now confirmed that Newcastle’s United’s third bid for Marc Guehi has been formally rejected by Crystal Palace.
It’s believed our latest proposal was worth £60m in total, with the club offering an initial £55m plus a further £5m in add-ons. However, this was officially turned down by Palace in the last 24 hours, despite Steve Parish’s comments earlier this week indicating that an agreement wasn’t close.
Sky’s Keith Downie insists that the deal is not dead, with the two clubs ‘still trying to find a solution’, but Toon chiefs are also ‘looking at alternatives’ to the England international in case a transfer to St James’ Park does not materialise.
Downie suggested earlier today that Palace were demanding at least £65m for their captain and insisted that he’s our top defensive target who we’ll push to sign over the final two weeks of the window.
We’ve been hoping for a compromise and waiting patiently for a major signing that improves our first team, but you get the feeling we’ll have to match their £65m demands or look elsewhere if we want to recruit a right-footed centre-back anytime soon.
