USWNT reclaims No. 1 spot in FIFA Rankings after Olympic triumph

The U.S. women’s national team’s gold medal in Paris have boosted them back to the No. 1 spot in the world.

Emma Hayes’ squad rose back to No. 1 in August’s FIFA Rankings, the federation announced Friday. The USWNT had previously dropped to No. 5 in June’s FIFA Rankings, which marked the program’s lowest ranking since the FIFA began Women’s Rankings in 2003.

The Americans defeated Brazil 1-0 in the Olympic Gold Medal match last weekend, earning their fifth all-time gold and seventh medal overall. Mallory Swanson’s goal proved to be the winning tally for the USWNT, who won all six matches they played in at the Olympics.

After group stage victories over Zambia, Germany, and Australia, Hayes’ squad registered three-consecutive shutout wins in the knockout round. A 1-0 quarterfinal triumph over Japan was followed up by semifinal and finals victories over Germany and Brazil.

The lone defeat for the Americans came in their final W Gold Cup group stage match, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Mexico.

The USWNT are scheduled to face Iceland twice and Argentina once during a busy October schedule before visiting England in a November friendly at Wembley Stadium. A second November match is set to be announced in due time.

England jumped back into the No. 2 spot while Spain dropped to No. 3 and Germany and Sweden rounded out the Top-5.

Canada, Japan, Brazil, North Korea, and France round out the Top 10.
