Bayer Leverkusen open the defence of their Bundesliga crown tonight when they take on Borussia Monchengladbach.
Xabi Alonso’s men romped to the title last season – finishing 17 points ahead of second-placed Stuttgart – and should be among the challengers again this term.
They have not had the smoothest of pre-seasons, though, with a Super Cup win over Stuttgart requiring a penalty shoot-out while they could only manage friendly draws against Real Betis and Lens either side of a 4-1 thrashing by Arsenal.
Monchengladbach eased past Erzgebirge Aue 3-1 in the DFB-Pokal last time out but have a poor record against Leverkusen, failing to win any of their last nine Bundesliga meetings, losing seven and drawing two.
