Barcelona cannot register new signing despite sealing fresh €10 million sale of defensive prodigy – report

After weeks of negotiations, Barcelona have finally confirmed the sale of Mika Faye to Stade Rennais.

The young defender is set to join the Ligue 1 outfit for a fee of €10.3 million, making him one of the most expensive sales for a player who did not feature in a single competition game for the Blaugrana.

Faye’s sale not enough to register Olmo

However, despite this recent sale, Barcelona are still not in a position to register new summer signing Dani Olmo, reports Catalunya Radio.

This is primarily because Barcelona had not registered Faye as part of the first team this summer. Therefore, his wages were not taken into consideration by La Liga in the first place, nor was it impacting Barça’s inflated wage bill.

In order to alleviate the pressure on the wage bill, Barcelona must sell someone who is already registered with the first team.

How can Faye’s sale help Barcelona?

Although Barcelona cannot use Faye’s sale to register Dani Olmo, the €10 million received from Rennes can be used to bolster the club’s coffers.

This money can prove to be helpful in the long-run, potentially aiding their bid to return to the 1:1 rule. It must be noted that even after the Aramark agreement, Barça still had to secure €60 million of additional revenue in order to return to the 1:1 rule.

The 1:1 rule entails Barcelona can spend each euro they earn, thus increasing their powers in the transfer market.

In any case, the coming few days could be crucial for Barcelona as they are also expected to officiate the sales of both Vitor Roque and Clement Lenglet. One would expect the club to register Olmo once these departures get confirmed.
