Barcelona defender closing in on €15 million move to Catalan rivals – report

Earlier in the day, Barcelona trimmed their defensive unit by announcing the sale of young prodigy Mika Faye.

The Senegalese international joined Rennes for a fee of €10.3 million, with Barcelona holding a €25 million buyback and a 30% sell-on fee clause.

But Faye is not the only Barcelona defender likely to leave the club this summer, with Eric Garcia and Clement Lenglet also in line to leave Catalonia.

Eric Garcia close to joining Girona

According to Diari ARA, Barcelona are progressing in talks with Girona over the transfer of Eric Garcia.

The former Man City defender enjoyed an excellent loan spell last season and it was always Michel’s wish to bring him back this summer.

Barcelona’s woes with an inflated wage bill have made the job easier for Girona and everything suggests Garcia could soon return to Estadi Montilivi.

Garcia, for his part, wanted to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place in the team. But if he does leave the club, his primary objective is to return to Montilivi.

As per the report, Girona will likely have to pay a fee of around €15 million for Eric Garcia, which could prove to be a reasonable deal for all parties involved.

How Garcia’s sale can aid Barcelona

Barcelona were not able to utilise the €10 million they received for Faye’s deal to register Dani Olmo, as the young defender was not a registered member of the first team.

But that won’t be the case for Eric Garcia. Barcelona can utilise the sale of the former Man City starlet and can thus register Olmo.

Not to mention, the €15 million generated from the sale can also help Barcelona’s offers, potentially helping the club return to the 1:1 rule as well.
