Barcelona told to fork out €30 million for Bundesliga-winning defender – report

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah has been widely linked with Barcelona over the past week given the club’s situation in central defence.

Olympic Gold medalist Eric Garcia was linked with a departure from the club over the past week and the Bundesliga star was seen as an able candidate to serve as a replacement if the La Masia graduate left.

Earlier today, however, the Blaugrana were dealt a huge blow when Eric Garcia was ruled out of tonight’s clash through plantar fasciitis with an unclear return date.

Focus on Tah

Garcia’s latest injury may not be very severe, but it appears to have helped the club get a first-hand experience of how fragile the centre-back department is.

After all, both Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen are out injured and will be unavailable for a few months. Pau Cubarsi and Iñigo Martinez, thus, are the only fit centre-backs for tonight.

Amidst the injury crisis in defence, Leverkusen’s Tah has emerged as a serious option for Barcelona. According to reports from Florian Plettenberg, the Bundesliga side demand €30 million for his signing.

The player has made it clear that he wishes to leave the club either this summer or next year as a free agent. He does not see an extension to be an option, putting pressure on the club to sell him.

The Catalans are clearly far from financial autonomy as they struggled to register their latest signing Dani Olmo in recent days.

Yet, they are optimistic that certain sponsorships will make them competitive on the market once more, opening the door to critical reinforcements.

While Tah is a versatile option, the price tag will undoubtedly deter Barcelona from his signing. The other options on their table include Cristhian Mosquera and Mario Hermoso.
