Germany banks the €7.4bn economic boost of Euro2024

August 27 – Euro 2024 generated an economic impact of more than €7.4 billion in Germany, according to a Nielsen Sports study.

That figure exceeded expectations said German federal minister of the interior and community Nancy Faeser. “We truly turned the European football championship into our “Heimspiel für Europa”, making it a summer of sport in the heart of Europe. I’m very pleased at the study’s findings: an economic impact of €7.4 billion in Germany exceeds expectations for hosting the tournament in Germany.

“And I’m especially happy that the economic, social and media impact of the tournament is directly benefitting the host cities. This wonderful tournament would not have been possible without the excellent organisational work and passionate dedication of our host cities.”

Euro 2024 was the third edition of UEFA’s 24-team continental tournament and the first after the Covid-19-hit iteration of Euro 2020 with venues scattered across Europe and matches often played in front of reduced crowds.

Nielsen Sports said that more than 90% of the €7.4 billion impact could be attributed to the expenditure of the 2.7 million ticket holders and highlighted that €571 million euros in advertising value was generated for the host cities and the host country combined because of visibility in the media and on social media.

The study found that 78% of ticket holders had a positive experience during a tournament that passed off largely without major incidents.

However, a lot of supporters endured frustration travelling with Deutsche Bahn around the host country.

Ticket holders were given discount tickets, but the German rail network struggled to deal with the hundreds of thousands of fans and its unreliable service was exposed. After widespread media criticism, Deutsche Bahn announced after the tournament that one of Germany’s main rail corridors would be closed for months as part of a major overhaul.
