AFC Wimbledon stun Ipswich to set up Toon tie

Premier League new boys Ipswich were dumped out of the EFL Cup on penalties by League Two AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday night.

Ali Al-Hamadi headed  the visitors ahead just four minutes in against the side from which he joined the Tractor Boys.

However Omar Bugiel and Matty Stevens headed the hosts infront only for another header, from Conor Chaplin four minutes from time, to send the tie to penalties.

Dons keeper Owen Goodman was the hero with saves from Jack Taylor and Omari Hutchinson to send his side into round three.

They will next face Newcastle who also needed penalties to progress at Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest in a game which saw Sandro Tonali make his comeback from a 10-month ban for gambling by playing the first hour.

Joe Willock turned the visitors ahead after just 18 seconds but went off injured soon after and Jota Silva’s superb second-half strike off the woodwork sent the tie to spot-kicks.

Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi missed for the hosts allowing Sean Longstaff to win it for the Magpies.

More VAR drama for Cherries

Bournemouth were left to bemoan VAR once again as they suffered late disappointment at West Ham.

With just two minutes until penalties, Mohammed Kudus’ shot cannoned off Jarrod Bowen and past Neto in the Bournemouth goal.

The Bournemouth staff – who had seen a potential winner against Newcastle on Sunday ruled out for handball by VAR – were convinced the ball had struck Bowen’s arm, but with no VAR in the EFL Cup, the goal stood.

Ivan Toney was not in the squad but Brentford join the Hammers in round three after seeing off Colchester 1-0 on the road thanks to a Keane Lewis-Potter strike on the stroke of half-time while Wolves eased past Burnley at Molineux thanks to goals either side of the break from Goncalo Guedes.
