According to various reports on Thursday afternoon, Newcastle’s attempts to sign Marc Guehi are on the brink of collapse.
Whether it’s failing to agree a fee after weeks of talks, Palace’s lack of time to replace him and Joachim Andersen or a knee injury suffered to fellow centre-back Chadi Riad, it seems our hopes of signing Eddie Howe’s top target are rapidly dwindling.
Here’s the updates we’ve seen from a number of national and north east reporters in the last few moments:
John Percy (The Telegraph) – ‘Guéhi to Newcastle sounds highly unlikely at this stage with Crystal Palace sticking to their valuation of around £70m. Obviously a day left in the window but the deal looks off.’
Sami Mokbel (The Mail) – ‘Marc Guehi’s move to Newcastle is on the ropes following more talks. Crystal Palace defender Chadi Riad’s knee injury emerging as a factor. Riad was having a scan this morning. Suspected MCL injury.’
Nizaar Kinsella (BBC) – ‘Concern Newcastle’s deal for Marc Guehi might collapse at this late stage. It would need to be agreed or collapse in time for a replacement to be found. A very important moment in the negotiations.’
Luke Edwards (The Telegraph) – ‘Newcastle will now have to pivot to someone like Simakan but we shall see. Like everyone else, I think there are serious questions to answer at #nufc. They have spent more than a month pursuing this deal which was supposedly close when negotiations started.’
Elsewhere, we’ve also seen HITC’s Graeme Bailey report that Palace have now upped their asking price to £75m.
Whatever has happened, it’s a real mess and a concern that we’ve pursued this deal for weeks – presumably with confidence it’ll go through – only to be left in this predicament ahead of tomorrow’s 11pm deadline.
