Alan Shearer’s brutal eight-word reaction as Newcastle reach 11pm without a signing

Alan Shearer believes Newcastle United have ‘failed’ Eddie Howe following a pretty awful end to the summer transfer window.

Reacting to George Caulkin’s post-window assessment for The Athletic, Shearer said: ‘They haven’t helped Eddie at all. Failed him.’

This comes after the club failed to sign anyone over the final three and a half weeks of the window, with no centre-back or right-winger arriving, Marc Guehi remaining at Crystal Palace and a deadline day bid for Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga falling flat.

We may have kept star players Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, but they may be questioning the fact we haven’t signed a single player that improvs Eddie Howe’s best 11 all summer.

PSR has clearly impacted us again – to an extent – and Howe has mentioned the importance of signing the “right players”, but we’ve known about our need for a new right-winger and centre-back all year.

It feels like we spend too long on the Guehi deal and lacked a plan B once that collapsed. An all round mess and so many lessons to learn.
