It looks like Newcastle United’s late move for Anthony Elanga has been unsuccessful following talks with Nottingham Forest.
TalkSPORT initially claimed that Newcastle were hopeful of striking a late deal, with some outlets claiming that the player was keen, but a host of reporters have issued a pretty bleak update with less than four hours remaining until the window shuts.
Here’s what a host of journalists have had to say, featuring Forest’s alleged asking price and a failed attempt to agree a part-exchange deal:
Keith Downie (Sky Sports) – ‘Told Newcastle’s approach for Elanga was met by a Forest expectation of a Newcastle player in return. But that wasn’t something that could be agreed by Newcastle. The move never went beyond discussion stage.’
Luke Edwards (The Telegraph) – ‘No deal. Newcastle are no longer talking to Forest, who demanded cash plus a player to proceed. There was an enquiry, no bid was made. Over before it started.’
Rob Dorsett (Sky Sports) – ‘#NFFC have roundly rejected #NUFC offer of £35m for Antony Elanga. Forest don’t want to sell. And I’m told it would take a “silly” offer for the club to be interested in leaving an Elanga-sized hole in the squad this late in the window.’
Martin Hardy (The Times) – ‘Late approach from Newcastle for Anthony Elanga but Forest, with no desire to sell, quote £50 million fee.’
Alex Crook (TalkSPORT) – ‘This is now looking highly unlikely due to it being too late in the day for #NFFC to source a replacement. #NUFC interest was serious. A bleak end to a frustrating window for Eddie Howe.’
Craig Hope (The Mail) – ‘Forest have no desire to sell Elanga, I’m told, and the offer would have to be too good to turn down if there was to be movement.’
