Pirlo wins new season’s managerial sack race after just three games

August 30 – Italy may be only a couple of weeks into its new season but the first high-profile managerial sacking has already taken place.

Sampdoria have dispensed with the services of Andrea Pirlo having lost twice and drawn once in their opening three matches, leaving them 19th in Serie B.

Pirlo, part of the Italian side that won the 2006 World Cup, was appointed Sampdoria boss in July 2023 following the club’s relegation from Serie A.

The Italian started his managerial career with Juventus in 2020, winning the Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup before being sacked after one season in Turin.

He joined Sampdoria after less than a season with Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk, leaving the side in ninth after his dismissal.

As a player, Pirlo played for Brescia, Reggina, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus and New York City FC before retiring in 2017. He won six Serie A titles with AC Milan and Juventus as well as two Champions League titles with the former.
