Heidenheim rolled to three points on Sunday against fellow Bundesliga side Augsburg, but the huge result came at a cost.
Midfielder Lennard Maloney left the 4-0 victory before halftime due to an apparent back injury. Maloney collided with Augsburg’s Fredrik Jensen on a corner kick, receiving a knee to the back that led him to be replaced in the 41st minute.
Paul Wanner’s ninth minute penalty-kick goal boosted the hosts in front 1-0 before Leo Scienza doubled Heidenheim’s lead on the half-hour mark.
Adrian Beck and Maximilian Breunig scored four minutes apart after the hour mark to ice Heidenheim’s victory at 4-0.
Maloney, who was a candidate for U.S. men’s national team duty this month, will now hope to not miss a lengthy period of time. The 24-year-old has made 70 combined appearances for Heidenheim since arriving in 2022.
He helped them to Bundesliga promotion in 2023 and proceeded to play a major role in Frank Schmidt’s squad reaching the UEFA Europa Conference League for the first time this summer.
Heidenheim will return to Bundesliga play on September 13 against Borussia Dortmund.
