Interim U.S. men’s national team head coach Mikey Varas will lead the Americans in September’s FIFA window and U.S. Soccer announced his roster for friendlies against Canada and New Zealand on Sunday.
Gio Reyna, Christian Pulisic, and Aidan Morris headline Varas’ 23-player roster for the upcoming pair of home matches. Dual-national goalkeeper Diego Kochen and fullback Marlon Fossey have been called up to the USMNT for the first time while recent Olympians Patrick Schulte and Caleb Wiley have also made the squad.
Weston McKennie was not included in the roster after beginning his preseason camp with Juventus late this summer. Antonee Robinson and Cameron Carter-Vickers, who have featured at club level this summer, were also left off the roster to rest for the October window.
Tim Weah and Gianluca Busio were not named to the squad, with both players dealing with respective injuries.
Several players who have made summer moves at club level will be part of the squad including goalkeeper Matt Turner, defenders Tim Ream and Auston Trusty, and midfielder Malik Tillman.
Forwards Haji Wright, Josh Sargent, and Brenden Aaronson all have two goals apiece in the EFL Championship while leading playmaker Christian Pulisic has one goal and one assist for AC Milan.
“We have a chance in these next two games to really show what we are about as team,” Varas said. “Our focus is on bringing a winning mentality and an aggressive approach so we can continue to move the program forward and set ourselves up for a great transition. It’s an incredible honor to have this opportunity.”
Varas, who was previously hired as the USMNT U-20 head coach in November 2021, led the U-20’s at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina. He also served as an opponent scout under Gregg Berhalter at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
