Gary Neville has given his verdict on Newcastle United’s transfer business in the last couple of months and taken a swipe at PSR for restricting a number of Premier League clubs.
Newcastle fans and Eddie Howe especially were left disappointed as deadline day passed having failed to secure a major signing when we probably needed at least another centre back and a right winger.
This was after losing two exciting young talents in Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, and Neville now claims that we are at a tricky ‘crossroads’ after spending well in the last three years.
The former Man United defender isn’t happy with the way PSR is encouraging clubs to sell their best academy players, adding that something must change with the financial rules.
Neville also claimed that Newcastle are being held back by the Premier League and that we should be allowed to compete financially with the very best in the league without these restrictions.
On Newcastle’s transfer business, Neville said: “I think what they’ve done in those first couple of years is build a really good foundation and I think we’ve all said that they’ve done it really well.
“We expected them to be a bit flamboyant, maybe a bit eccentric we’ve seen why Chelsea have done with all that money. Newcastle have been measured and I think done a really good job.
“Just listening to Eddie in his interview I would suggest that he feels disappointed with what’s happened in the last few months and you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out that he should be disappointed because they should have got better players for him having lost the players they’ve lost.
“I think that now it’s on that crossroads moment that was always going to come a couple of years in with what do you do next, how do you then take it to the next level, how do you support Howe to where he needs to get to. It’s a very challenging moment they’re about to embark upon.”
