Left-back Jamal Lewis, deemed surplus to requirements and no longer part of Eddie Howe’s plans, has completed a move to Brazilian Serie A side São Paulo.
Newcastle have confirmed that the deal is an initial loan move until the end of June 2025, with the South Americans having the option to make the move permanent.
Lewis signed for United from Norwich City in 2020, leaving the club where he had broken through to the professional game and becoming Mike Ashley’s sixth most expensive signing in a £15m deal.
Initially playing frequently but struggling under the management of Steve Bruce, he saw his playing time decrease over the next few years, as Howe preferred other options such as Dan Burn and Matt Targett.
As a result, the Northern Ireland international never saw his true potential realised on Tyneside, often struggling to perform when given rare opportunities to impress.
This will be Lewis’ second loan in as many seasons, having spent the entirety of 2023/24 on loan at Watford in the championship.
Best of luck in Brazil, Jamal!
