Alex Morgan announces retirement, to play final match on Sunday

One of the U.S. women’s national team’s most successful players will play her final match this Sunday.

Alex Morgan announced her retirement from professional soccer on Thursday. Morgan, who is pregnant with her second child, will conclude her playing career Sunday in the San Diego Wave’s NWSL match vs. the North Carolina Courage.

The 35-year-old enjoyed an impactful 15-year playing career at both club and international level. Morgan ranks fifth all-time in USWNT history with 123 goals scored and ninth all-time with 53 career assists.

The USWNT never lost in a match that Morgan scored in, winning on 76 of those 86 occasions. She won two FIFA Women’s World Cup, one Olympic Gold Medal, one Olympic Bronze Medal, and one CONCACAF W Gold Cup.

“I grew up on this team, it was so much more than soccer,” said Morgan, who came into her first USWNT training camp at the end of 2009 at age 20. “It was the friendships and the unwavering respect and support among each other, the relentless push for global investment in women’s sports, and the pivotal moments of success both on and off the field. I am so incredibly honored to have borrowed the crest for more than 15 years.

“I learned so much about myself in that time and so much of that is a credit to my teammates and our fans. I feel immense pride in where this team is headed, and I will forever be a fan of the USWNT. My desire for success may have always driven me, but what I got in return was more than I could have ever asked and hoped for,” she added.

At club level, Morgan featured for several NWSL clubs including the San Diego Wave, Portland Thorns, and Orlando Pride. In addition, Morgan also spent time with French club Lyon and English side Tottenham.

Morgan has totaled over 90 goals in 212 career club appearances, winning six trophies including the UEFA W Champions League title.
