September 9 – The former Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Boyko Borisov, has said the government will provide nearly BGN 11 million (€5.1 million) for the reconstruction of third division club Maritsa Plovdiv’s stadium.
Maritsa Plovdiv is currently in a financial crisis and only a month ago had to turn to its fans for financial support in order to keep playing.
After a meeting of the club’s management with Borisov, the mayor of Plovdiv Kostadin Dimitrov and the legendary Bulgarian player Hristo Stoichkov, it was announced that Maritsa’s financing was secured until the end of next year.
The club will receive BGN 400,000 (€200 000) by the end of 2025. This money will come from Vladimir Temelkov, deputy mayor of Plovdiv, via the city’s ‘Digitalization, European projects, business development and education’ department, as well as his personal companies.

During the rule of GERB, the two Plovdiv clubs – Botev and Lokomotiv -received more than BGN 100 million (€50 million) from the state to reconstruct their stadiums.
“After the stadium of Botev and after the stadium of Lokomotiv, so that the people of Maritza don’t look askance at us, we will build them a stadium that will cost about BGN 10-11 million (€5-6 m). So far, I have no unfulfilled promises,” said Borisov.
“Mr. Vladimir Temelkov is personally committed to providing financing for the club from his business projects in the field of information technology. BGN 300,000 (€150,000) will be provided by Mr. Temelkov, he himself stated. The funds are for next year to keep the football club going. BGN 100 000 (€50,000), again Mr. Temelkov’s personal money, will be provided by the end of this year,” read Maritsa’s statement.
