Former England and Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has joined the Italian media in praising Sandro Tonali’s after the Newcastle midfielder’s stellar performances in the UEFA Nations League over the international break.
The Azzurri recorded a 3-1 win in Paris last week and beat Israel 2-1 last night, and after a disappointing defence of their EURO crown this past summer, Tonali has been highlighted as a player sorely missed by his national team.
“His return was crucial. With him, Frattesi and Ricci, the midfield is more dynamic.” said Capello. “We would have needed this midfield at the Euros because Jorginho lacked the required intensity.”
Capello isn’t the only one Tonali has impressed, as a host of Italian outlets reacted to his latest display in Italy’s win over Israel last night to make it back-to-back Nations League wins:
Eurosport Italy:“Not only does he create, but he shows an overflowing physical condition despite coming from a year of suspension. There is no way around it: with him in the construction phase, Italy is a different team and his value soars.”
Leggo: “He covers a lot of kilometres and also puts in a lot of quality. A modern midfielder, capable of doing everything with great naturalness. He even comes close to scoring. He never stops. Inexhaustible.”
Corriere Della Sera: “It’s a dirty game, for him it’s the second as a starter in a few days after 11 months: he goes beyond the fatigue, without holding back. Leader.”
After nearly a year away from competitive football, Tonali’s performances so far have attracted much acclaim for his speed, intensity and technical ability on the field for both club and country.
His assist for Inter Milan’s Federico DiMarco equaliser, an impressive flick followed by a thunderous volley, perfectly showcased Tonali’s technical abilities, and it won’t be a surprise to see him become a staple of Luciano Spalletti’s team moving…
