After breaking onto the first-team scene superbly last season, Lewis Miley has had a tough 2024 filled with injury setbacks.
A back problem ended his 2023/24 campaign early in March and he’s had no pre-season after suffering a freak foot injury in July, but an update has arrived on his comeback today from The Athletic’s Chris Waugh.
During a Q&A, the North East reporter reveals that he’s been penciled in to return in October, with the 18-year-old making good progress behind the scenes after surgery on a broken metatarsal.
Waugh expects the teenager to return around the next international break in October, meaning he’s likely to miss upcoming games against Wolves, Fulham, Wimbledon, Man City and Everton between now and then.
However, the club will ease him back in and have that luxury following Sandro Tonali’s return and news that Joe Willock’s thigh problem is not serious. His route to first-team football won’t be easy now we have plenty of options in midfield, but it could benefit Miley if he’s eased in slowly after an injury-riddled 2024.
The Geordie talent signed a long-term deal at St James’ Park in January and enjoyed a superb breakthrough season last term, not only scoring his first Premier League goal in a 3-0 win over Fulham but starting in the Champions League away to PSG.
