Paul Mitchell leaves Newcastle official baffled as four take issue with latest claims – Report

According to Luke Edwards at The Telegraph, Dan Ashworth, Amanda Staveley, Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Steve Nickson are understood to have been left ‘hurt and bemused’ by Paul Mitchell’s comments last week.

In a recent interview, Mitchell claimed that the club’s transfer structure was ‘not fit for purpose’ and that we had overpaid for players in the past; something he was not willing to do over the final two months of the summer window.

Of course, Staveley, Ghodoussi and Ashworth have since left the club, but head of recruitment Steve Nickson remains in his head of recruitment position and is believed to be frustrated at his loss of responsibility since Mitchell came.

Edwards reports that one unnamed source believes Mitchell’s criticism was an ‘attempt to blame others for his own failure to sign a marquee player in his first window’ after he tried and failed to land Marc Guehi over the final four to five weeks of the summer.

Newcastle had been on the verge of a 10-point deduction the day before the PSR deadline and narrowly managed to avoid a penalty with the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh. Perhaps this was part of Mitchell’s concern and added to his unease at previous spending before his arrival?

Moving forwards, Mitchell is hoping to recall the club’s recruitment strategy and clearly isn’t afraid of making a few enemies along the way to get his methods in place.

Given the poor summer he oversaw (in part) and the failure to land our top target in Guehi, the pressure will be on our nw sporting director to deliver in 2025.
