Bulgarian FA looks to tap into €1.3bn EU fund to build new facilities

September 12 – The Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) has applied for grants from a European Union aid programme to renovate and build stadiums and football bases in 40 Bulgarian municipalities.

The new executive director of the BFU, Andrey Petrov, said: “Everything is planned so that the federation functions in the best possible way. We desire to continue to implement the strategic plans, to communicate with the clubs and all interested parties in order to hear their opinion. We will apply under the ‘Development of the Regions 2021-2027 program’, financed at the European Union level and national co-financing. We are targeting 40 municipalities. The budget is huge – €1.3 billion, which these municipalities can absorb. We are discussing the possibilities for financing, renovation and reconstruction of existing football facilities. We are actively working with the municipalities and are planning to hold a joint meeting.”

The president of the Bulgarian Football Union Georgi Ivanov added that the federation is also aiming to build a new national stadium. At the moment, talks are on hold, as Bulgaria is facing another parliamentary election.

“We have not given up on this idea of a new national stadium. At the moment there is no point in meeting and talking with someone who will be replaced in two or three months. We will only waste time talking. We will have talks after the elections, and that under the condition that a new government is formed,” said Ivanov.
