Howe issues update on 5 Newcastle players – Good and bad news ahead of Wolves trip

Eddie Howe has been speaking to the press this morning ahead of Sunday’s trip to Wolves and he started with an update on injuries and availability.

The good news is that none of our internationals have returned with any concerns, but there’s bad news on Callum Wilson who is “behind where we wanted him to be” and still a few weeks away from returning following a back issue.

Joe Willock has trained this week but not with the main group, suggesting Sunday may come too soon for him. However, Emil Krafth is fine and back in full training after withdrawing from Sweden’s two games due to a ‘minor injury.’

Howe insisted Bruno Guimaraes is OK despite coming off at half-time in Brazil’s 1-0 defeat to Paraguay and believes Sandro Tonali is in a good place after building his fitness during two big wins over Italy over the break.

Howe on Willock – “We have seen him in training this week, albeit not full training, but he’s been with the group so positive for sure.”

How on Wilson – “He hasn’t had a setback but he’s a little bit behind where we wanted him to be. We envisaged that he might be training at this moment in preparation for the games ahead but he’s probably a little bit behind. Hopefully in the coming weeks he will be (back), but it’s not a long-term problem.”

Howe on Krafth – “He’s been nursing a problem but we’ve seen him in training. We’re hoping he’ll be OK.”

Howe on Tonali – “Yeah I was pleased to see him play first. Firstly, I think those games will have done him the world are good and he’s performed well and been part of a winning team as well. So great for Sandro. I’m sure it’s pretty early steps for him. It’s the first few weeks back and we’re delighted he’s available.”

Howe on the break – “It [the international break] has been productive for us, some good training, I have been pleased. We gave the lads a rest and then started our preparation towards Wolves.”

Howe on our start…
