Shock footage explains why Newcastle’s cup clash with Wimbledon has been called off

Newcastle United have now confirmed that our trip to Wimbledon in the third round of the Carabao Cup has been postponed due to flooding.

It emerged earlier this morning that Tuesday night’s 7.45pm kick-off was in serious doubt and it’s clear to see why, with footage on social media showing severe flooding around Plough Lane and what appears to be a sinkhole of some sort on the pitch.

No new date has been given for the third round tie as of yet, but it’s due to be rescheduled. If Wimbledon can not find a fix soon and are unable to carry out the fixture, there’s a chance Newcastle receive a by to the fourth round.

Confirming the postponement, a statement on NUFC’s official website said: ‘Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup third round tie at AFC Wimbledon has been postponed following extensive overnight flooding at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

‘The match, which was scheduled for 7:45pm BST on Tuesday evening, will now be rescheduled. Further details, including information for ticket holders, will be announced in due course.’

The draw for the fourth round is due to take place on Wednesday night after Liverpool’s clash with West Ham live on Sky Sports.
