Newcastle United have been linked with a new name this week in Burnley winger Luca Koleosho.
According to Graeme Bailey at HITC, Toon scouts have watched the 20-year-old on several occasions already this season, suggesting he is the latest name under consideration after we failed to recruit a right-sided forward over the summer.
Koleosho missed large parts of Burnley’s relegation campaign last term due to injury, but the Italian U21 international has made an impressive start to the Championship season under Scott Parker.
The American-born wide man scored the winner in the Clarets’ win at Leeds two weekends ago and has netted twice in five games so far, seeing Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa also send scouts to watch him in action.
If true, this isn’t the only Burnley player we’ve been tracking in recent months, with reports suggesting we had a £15m offer rejected for James Trafford over the summer.
This week, the Northern Echo reveal that we maintain big admirers of the England U21 star and haven’t given up hope of signing the goalkeeper to arrive as a long-term replacement for current No.1 Nick Pope.
Back to Koleosho, he’s young, can play down either flank, has some Premier League experience and wouldn’t cost a huge sum of money. The latter would feed into the club’s PSR-driven approach to buying young gems before they explode onto the scene, but there’s an argument to say any new right-winger must take us to the next level and offer a big upgrade on Almiron and Murphy. Is Koleosho that? He could be, but it would be a gamble.
