According to a new report, Eddie Howe has asked Paul Mitchell to negotiate new contracts for Sean Longstaff, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.
This comes from Graeme Bailey at HITC, who claims that Howe is keen to keep all three on Tyneside now all three are out of contract next summer as things stand.
It’s believed Longstaff is keen to sign a long term deal and commit his future to his boyhood club, but remains to be seen if those terms will be offered with Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley posing stiff competition in that right-sided midfield slot.
As for Schar and Burn, both deserve extensions – Schar in particular is ageing like a fine wine and still has plenty to offer – although both are 32 and may do well to get anything more than one-year extensions at this stage of their career.
If these claims from Bailey are true, it’ll be interesting to see if Mitchell backs Howe’s demands or makes a counter-argument, especially if he feels our current squad is in need of an overhaul next summer. That said, it would be poor business to lose any of the trio for nothing, making new deals favorable even if it was to protect their value.
With contract talks also said to be in the offing for Anthony Gordon – out of contract in 2026 – and Alexander Isak, it promises to be a busy few months for Mitchell and Darren Eales as we build up to a potential busy 2025.
