Swiss court refuses FIFA’s attempt to muzzle free speech

September 24 – A Zurich court has dismissed FIFA’s lawsuit against Google over the alleged defamation resulting from a website appearing in Google’s search engine.

Fifacolonialism has repeatedly held FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino to task over their alleged interference with the governance of football in Africa, including influencing the leadership of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and accusations of Infantino playing a direct role in the appointment of presidents at CAF.

Swiss media report that the global governing body’s audacious legal challenge against the US tech giant has failed to convince the commercial court in Zurich, FIFA’s home city. FIFA wanted Fifacolonialism removed from Google’s search engine.

The court ruling says that the website – Fifacolonialism – does not appear at all if you just google ‘fifa’. Google, the court reasoned, can then not be held responsible for reputational damages.

Google can keep displaying search results and articles for the term ‘Fifa’ and FIFA must pay Google compensation. The world federation can still appeal the decision.
