Newcastle on the verge of major breakthrough after contract talks – Report

The Mail’s Craig Hope is reporting that Anthony Gordon is ‘close’ to agreeing a contract extension that will see the England winger commit his future to Newcastle United.

A report earlier today from The Telegraph hinted that talks between the player and the club were slow and weren’t progressing, but Hope is now claiming that discussions have accelerated and in the right direction.

Hope writes “Those discussions have accelerated and we understand there has been significant progress in recent weeks, with the framework of the package in place. Club sources are confident that the final details will be signed off shortly.”

The North-East reporter has also said that despite interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, who Gordon almost transferred to as part of a sensational swap deal for Joe Gomez, the 23-year-old crucially wants to stay at Newcastle and is settled on Tyneside.

Gordon has recorded a mixed start to the season so far, enjoying a constant presence in the starting XI but only has the one goal so far to his name with the equaliser against AFC Bournemouth. Hope adds, “He (Gordon) is yet to find the consistency of last season, but there is a feeling inside the club that he is close to hitting the levels that won him elevation to the England squad in March. A new contract and reward for his progress would no doubt help.”

After a frustrating summer and a frustrating 3-1 defeat at Fulham last weekend, this would be a welcome boost for Howe and big win for Paul Mitchell should Gordon commit his future to the club.
