£50,000 man makes first Toon appearance since 2021 as new boss gets off to flyer

As Newcastle United’s first team beat Wimbledon at St James’ Park last night, our Under-21s were also in action, playing Halifax Town in the National League Cup.

They came from behind to win 2-1 and there was there was a surprise name in the starting lineup, with forgotten man Isaac Hayden playing 60 minutes.

Following recent loan spells with Norwich, Standard Liege and QPR, this was the first time the 29-year-old has featured for Newcastle United since December 2021, where he started in a 4-0 defeat to Man City at St James’ Park.

Hayden failed to land a loan move over the summer and desperately needs a fresh start elsewhere. Quite incredibly, his contract is still valid until the summer of 2026, as Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley’s Newcastle handed the midfielder a six-year deal back in 2020, thought to be worth around £50,000-per-week.

As for the game itself, it caps off a solid start for new U21 boss Diarmuid O’Carroll, as second half goals from Johnny Emerson and Ben Parkinson completed the comeback and a 2-1 win just a few days after our young Mags beat Blackburn 2-0 in the Premier League 2.

Trevan Sanusi was also involved for the U21s last night along with Travis Hernes, Cathal Heffernan, Charlie McArthur and Leo Shahar, which explains why all five failed to feature in our Carabao Cup tie against Wimbledon.

Newcastle United Under-21s: Aidan Harris, Leo Shahar, Cathal Heffernan (c), Charlie McArthur, Dylan Charlton, Isaac Hayden (Anthony Munda 60), Travis Hernes (James Huntley 70), Jay Turner-Cooke, Alfie Harrison (Trevan Sanusi 60), Johnny Emerson (Josh Donaldson 70), Ben Parkinson (Ellis Stanton 80).

Subs not used: Ciaran Thompson, Adrian Janusz.
