October 4 – Portuguese giants Benfica have reported losses of €31.4 million for the 2023-24 season on turnover of €179 million excluding player transfers.
The revenue figure was a drop of 8.6% on the previous year, attributed primarily to a 34% drop in prize money from European club competition income. Benfica exited the Champions League at the group stage having made the quarter finals in the 2022-23 season.
Despite the renewal of Emirates as the club’s main sponsor through to 2029, sponsorship income was down 6% to €22.5 million.
Broadcast revenue reached €50.5 million, an increase of 3.3%, while ticketing grew by 5% to €35 million.
Adding in transfer income, 2023-2024 revenue rises to €256.4 million, 10% less than in the previous season. While the club earned €77.3 million from player transfers, capital gains from the transfers fell by 8% on the previous season to € 58.4 million .
First team salaries rose by 4%, to €110.5 million. Overall operating expenses grew 3% to €252.2 million.
After two matches of the new Champions League season, including a 4-0 thrashing of Atletico Madrid, Benfica lie third in the table and on course for automatic entry to the last 16 under the revamped UCL format.
