“I’m frustrated” – Howe reacts to Everton draw and big talking points

Eddie Howe has spoke to the media following on from Newcastle’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Everton away at Goodison Park.

Newcastle were left to rue many missed opportunities, including an early goal line clearance by Iliman Ndiaye from Bruno Guimaraes’ shot,  despite having the lion’s share of possession and shots across the 90 minutes.

“We created a lot of good chances and I am frustrated we haven’t won. But it was much better. It looked like we were snatching at chances.

“I have to credit the players because it is a difficult environment to play in and it is a much better defensive display from us too. Big steps forward.

“I think there has been a reaction. We stood up to the physical test and were technically very good. We are trying to break barriers and have an outstanding season. I think we are capable of more and we have some tough fixtures to come.”

The main talking point from the game came in the first half, when Anthony Gordon, last week’s penalty hero against Manchester City, saw his spot kick saved by former teammate Jordan Pickford, much to the delight of both the Everton players and fans.

Speaking about Gordon’s performance against his old club, Howe commented “I think Anthony handled the occasion very well. I think his all-round game was very good. He will be disappointed with the penalty. Credit to Jordan Pickford for the save.”

Many have been quick to question if Gordon was the right option to take the penalty considering the circumstances, and having a seasoned pen taker like Fabian Schar also available, but Howe has stood by his number 10.

“There was a lot of pressure on him in that moment, but he’s been an outstanding penalty taker.”

“I see him work on it every day in training, so I’ve got no issues with him taking it, or taking another one in the future. We really do back him, and I think he did really well in the game.”

“Anyone can miss a penalty. We absolutely support him, he’s been incredible…
