Bulgaria’s Hristo Botev stadium revamp achieves UEFA Category IV status

October 10 – Botev Plovdiv’s Hristo Botev stadium has become just the third venue in the country to achieve a category 4 classification by UEFA.

The national stadium Vasil Levski in Sofia and Bulgarian champion Ludogorets’ Huvepharma Arena in Razgrad are the other stadiums with high classifications.

The Hristo Botev stadium in Plovdiv is currently completing its renovation but its new category status means it can host club competitions up to the semi-final phase of European club tournaments, including the Champions League.
Botev’s ultimate ambition is for the stadium to be able to host finals of European club tournaments.

“We are happy to inform you that the Hristo Botev stadium is now IV category according to UEFA regulations. Our home is ready to host matches of the highest level for the joy of all football fans in Bulgaria,” said a club statement.

“For more than two years now, we have been making every effort to make the ‘College’ shine with the brilliance it deserves. We’ve been through a lot and we know there’s more work to do.

“We are categorical that we will continue to uncompromisingly follow every step of the process until the completion of the Hristo Botev stadium – one of the symbols of the city of Plovdiv.”

Although relatively new, the stadium has had setbacks in recent months, forcing it to close for several weeks due to problems with the turf.

The reconstruction of the stadium, in Bulgaria’s second largest city, cost the state nearly €35 million.

As well as homing the Botev Plovdiv club, the stadium is also used by Bulgaria’s national team which is playing its home games in the Nations League there.
