Greece players mourn George Baldock

Greece will wear black armbands against England at Wembley tonight to mark the passing of George Baldock with the players admitting their pain is “indescribable”.

Baldock, who won 12 caps for Greece, was found dead in his swimming pool in Athens yesterday. Police say there was no sign of criminal activity.

The 31-year-old Panathinaikos full-back was best known in England for his time at Sheffield United for whom he made over 200 appearances and twice won promotion to the Premier League.

Reports suggest Greece approached UEFA to try to get tonight’s Nations League game postponed but were told there was no room in the packed schedule.

A statement from the Greece squad read: “It is impossible to believe that our dear friend and team-mate, George, is no longer with us. Our pain is indescribable.

“Tonight, we will try to reach the strength of his soul, which is a bright example for us all. Our thoughts are with his family. We will never forget you friend.”

Baldock was born in England but qualified for Greece via his maternal grandmother. He made his Greece debut in 2022 against Northern Ireland in Belfast.
