Reasons why Hansi Flick has asked Barcelona not to sign pivot in January – report

In a recent update from SPORT, it has been reported that Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has decided to halt plans for signing a new pivot player in the upcoming January transfer window. 

This decision is based on two main reasons. Firstly, Flick believes that the current midfield options—Marc Casado, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Frenkie de Jong, and Gavi—are capable of performing well until the end of the season. 

Secondly, he has faith in Marc Bernal as a promising player for the future, despite his recent injury setback.

Optimism within Barcelona

A few months ago, Barcelona had identified the recruitment of a top-level midfielder as a crucial objective to enhance their squad depth.

However, the situation has changed significantly and reports from the club suggest a more optimistic outlook for January, particularly as they anticipate a return to the 1-1 rule concerning salary limits. 

This development is critical as it could lead to potential player departures, creating opportunities for new signings if needed.

Although the discussion surrounding the need for a new pivot player has resurfaced, it appears that Flick has firmly closed the door on this option.

Flick trusting his options

At present, Flick is confident that the midfield position is adequately filled. He is also keen to keep the door open for Bernal’s future contributions. He is optimistic that Bernal has the potential to become a significant player for Barcelona. 

While Bernal’s recovery from a serious injury has slowed his progress, the coaching staff views him as the successor to Sergio Busquets. 

This season, Flick also anticipates the return of Gavi and Fermin Lopez while expecting De Jong to step up further in his role. With these options available, he feels well-equipped to manage the midfield dynamics.
