€35m Newcastle target set to be available for cut-price fee in January – Report

€35m Newcastle target set to be available for cut-price fee in January – Report

Newcastle could be granted the opportunity to land a cut-price deal for AC Milan defender Malik Thiaw, according to reports.

The centre-back was a major target during the summer and heavy linked over June and July, but talk of a potential move to Tyneside seemed to fade in August.

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport state that Milan had wanted €30m-€35m during that point, but now the German has lost his place in the starting XI, it would be hard for them to ask for an amount that high.

The 23-year-old has reportedly ‘disappeared from the radar’, playing just 90 minutes of football in the Serie A this season. He has been dropped following a poor performance against Torino, with Milan boss Paulo Fonseca opting for Matteo Gabbia in his place.

The towering defender joined Milan from Schalke 04 for £6.5 million in 2022, but his time at the San Siro has been mixed after signs of real promise, with injuries impacting his run in the side last season.

As for Newcastle, their arduous pursuit of Marc Guehi during the summer is well-documented. Crystal Palace held firm and knocked back several offers for the England international, whose contract is up at Selhurst Park in June of 2026.

In any case, with Liverpool reportedly after Guehi and Palace unlikely to accept a cut-price deal after rejecting a £70m offer just a few months ago, Newcastle may benefit from making another approach to Thiaw instead.

The defender still has a high ceiling and can be moulded and developed under Howe into an elite central defender to be played alongside Sven Botman when the Dutchman returns in the New Year.
