Newcastle midfielder set to accept unlikely offer from former Toon boss – Report

Reports indicate that Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden, previously on loan at QPR, looks set to accept an invitation to play under a former Toon boss in Steve McClaren.

Hayden could soon find himself playing for the Jamaican National Team, currently managed by none other than Steve McClaren, after seemingly accepting an offer to switch international allegiances from England to Jamaica.

As revealed by TEAMTalk and the Jamaican Observer, Hayden qualifies to play for the Reggae Boyz through his Jamaican-born father, having previously played for England for at almost every level, but never making a senior appearance for the Three Lions.

The report also added “it is understood that paperwork is being finalised for the defensive midfielder to represent Jamaica on the senior international stage ahead of November’s international break.”

Hayden could be just the latest name to switch from England to Jamaica, with a host of current and former Premier League talents, including Ethan Pinnock, Mason Holgate and Demarai Gray, all having changed allegiances in the past few years.

McClaren’s invitation could serve as a career lifeline to the 29-year-old, who doesn’t figure into any first team plans at St James’ Park and hasn’t made a PL appearance for Eddie Howe’s side since December 2021.

After an unsuccessful Copa America campaign earlier in the summer, in which they failed to win a single point in the group stage, McClaren and Jamaica will be hoping that the likes of Hayden can bolster their squad enough to see them through qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
