According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Newcastle United could battle Benfica for the signing of Boca Juniors winger Kevin Zenon, who has a release clause of £14m in his contract.
It seems Newcastle have been watching the 23-year-old for a while now – he’s been linked on several occasions over the past 12 months – but we’ve never actually made a formal move for Zenon following his impressive displays for Argentina during this summer’s Olympics.
It would be a fairly inexpensive signing on the right wing, but having sold Yankuba Minteh recently and failing to capture a replacement, fans may be hoping for a star signing to fill that role.
That’s not to say Zenon couldn’t become a top player, but it’s more of a low-cost gamble for Newcastle, who are thought to be competing with Benfica and Real Madrid for his signature should we up our apparent interest.
O Jogo report that the Portuguese side look to be in pole position having made contact with Boca Juniors over a possible deal, but Newcastle appear to be big admirers. With Paul Mitchell encouraging the club to cast our net wider in our global search for hidden talent, it’ll be interesting to see if his name emerges in January.
