“Most underrated” player at Newcastle named during brilliant Sean Longstaff interview

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast in a brilliant chat with Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker, Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff has named Joe Willock as the “most underrated” player at the club.

Willock has been very unfortunate with injuries over the last 18 months, but when he has been fit he’s been a great addition to the team and was crucial to our Champions League push.

The midfielder just gives us something different to Bruno Guimaraes or Sandro Tonali, with his speed and athleticism particularly useful in transition against teams that like to play high up the pitch.

Longstaff is clearly a big fan of the former Arsenal mad after telling Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker how he’s ’so vital’ to the team and that his willingness to take risks is key.

On our midfield options, Longstaff said: “The most underrated player is Joe Willock. When he’s fit he’s so, so vital to us. The way he carries the ball, he’s so athletic, he doesn’t think too much in terms of he’s willing to take risks and try things which I think makes him so good.”

He struggled in his cameo against Brighton, but hopefully the 25-year-old can maintain his fitness and get a good run of games under his belt, as a fit and firing Joe Willock is a handful for any team.
