Newcastle United director Paul Mitchell has claimed that developing, rewarding and retaining young talents is ‘essential’ to the club’s long-term plans following the news of Anthony Gordon signing a new contract.
There had been rumours surrounding the future of the England star this summer with Newcastle struggling financially, but Gordon has put those to bed by committing his future to the club.
Despite selling two of our other top young players in Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, Mitchell suggested that this kind of thing can’t happen in the future if we want to be successful.
On Gordon’s new deal, Mitchell said: “Anthony is a top player with so much still ahead of him. We are all delighted that he is committed to the journey we’re on at Newcastle United.
“Our staff have done a tremendous job in nurturing his talent and evolving his game, and Anthony deserves so much credit for his commitment to pushing himself to be better and to achieve every day.
“Developing, rewarding and retaining our talented young players is an essential part of building towards sustainable success, and Anthony has a big part to play as we strive to reach our ambitious targets.”
The most important thing for us as a club is retaining our best players to help us ‘build towards sustainable success’ and allow us to become one of the top clubs in the Premier League, as Mitchell alludes to.
Gordon himself had already declared his admiration for the club and supporters and is adamant that he wants to win a trophy with the Magpies in the very near future. Let’s hope he can help make our dreams come true!
