Newcastle face difficult transfer negotiations with Alexander Isak to try and tie down the Swede to a new deal at St James’ Park, as conflicting reports have emerged about prospective contract talks.
According to The i’s Mark Douglas, Magpie leadership looks to further implement a “happy camp” strategy to secure the futures of their biggest stars, which included the recent contract extension of Anthony Gordon and Joelinton’s new deal earlier this year.
Isak is said to be a much more difficult talent to tie down however. “Given his growing stature in the Premier League, there’s an acceptance that a bump in the terms given to him when he signed will be required – and there is now a precedent with Newcastle’s approach to Gordon.”
Douglas also says that, despite ramped up interest from Arsenal and Chelsea in the £100m-rated man, the former Sociedad striker is said to be content with his position and future at the club.
However, the Mail’s Craig Hope has exclusively revealed that Newcastle are not yet in negotiations with Isak, with last season’s top scorer seeking Champions League football, which has put Mikel Arteta and the Gunners in red alert.
With such conflicting reports emerging in such a short space of time from two of Newcastle’s more reputable journalists, only time (and Newcastle’s future form) will be able to tell us if Alexander Isak is set to remain a Newcastle United player, or if his future lies in the capital playing continental football.
